Residential Construction Cost Calculator – Houston & Texas
Explore an illustrative budget for a kitchen or bathroom remodel, whole-home renovation, room addition, fire or water damage restoration, a new custom home or townhome development. See how scope, finishes and the age of the home move the number, then review the project with Epex before you sign anything.

The total adds design, permitting and construction in sequence. Stages may overlap; HOA approval, special-order cabinets and finishes, weather, utilities and inspections may add time. These prototype ranges are not a move-in date commitment.
Before You Sign a Contract
A calculator cannot see your house, your lot, your plans or what is behind the walls. Have Epex walk the project and review the assumptions before you commit to a budget or a builder.

These planning assumptions require project-specific verification. Construction, soft-cost and contingency amounts are central assumptions; the displayed budget range applies the low/high factors to their total.

Planning disclaimer: This calculator provides an early planning range only. It is not a construction bid, contractor proposal, appraisal, insurance estimate, guaranteed maximum price or professional cost estimate. Actual costs and schedules depend on drawings, existing conditions, hidden damage, site and soil conditions, utilities, HOA and jurisdiction requirements, selections, bids, inspections and current market conditions.
How the Residential Construction Cost Calculator Works
The calculator starts from a base construction cost per square foot for your project type, then adjusts for the Texas market, finish level and either the age of the home (for remodels, additions and restoration) or the lot and site conditions (for new homes, townhomes and ADUs). Remodel projects are then adjusted for layout changes, plumbing, electrical and HVAC scope; new construction is adjusted for foundation type, number of stories and utility work. It adds design, engineering and permit costs and a contingency that grows when plans are not started, the home is older or key answers are still “not sure.” Finally, it subtracts the funds you enter from each end of the range and floors the result at zero. This gap does not account for loan draw timing, insurance depreciation holdbacks or deductibles.
What Drives Residential Construction Costs in Houston
- What is behind the walls. Older Houston homes can hide cast-iron drains, aluminum or undersized wiring, foundation movement and moisture damage that only show up after demolition.
- Moving things around. Keeping the existing kitchen or bath layout is the biggest cost saver. Relocating plumbing, removing load-bearing walls or reworking a slab adds engineering and trade cost quickly.
- Selections. Cabinets, countertops, tile, fixtures and appliances can swing a kitchen or bath budget more than the labor does. Long-lead items also drive the schedule.
- Foundation, drainage and flood zone. For new homes and additions, soil, drainage requirements and any floodplain elevation requirements can change the foundation design and cost.
- Fire and water damage. Restoration scope depends on smoke, soot and moisture testing, code upgrades triggered by the repair, and what your insurance carrier approves. Read the fire damage remodeling and restoration page for how we approach claims.
